Factual error: The advertising boards on the upper level of the arena for Delta Airlines and United Airlines are anachronistic for 1999. The logo for Delta did not take that form until 2007, and the logo for United did not take that form until their merger with Continental Airlines in 2010.
Trivia: During the prologue of the movie where Cage is giving doing media interviews, there is a scene where he's obviously green-screened in front of the NORAD control center taken directly from WarGames.
Continuity mistake: After changing the name of the freighter from Kristol to Kono, there is a moment where you see Valentine's perspective as he examines the name on the stern of the ship. For some reason in this shot, the K in Kono is inverted.
Continuity mistake: When Kirk and Uhura's turbolift arrives at the bridge, Sulu is visible in the background sitting at the helm station at the front of the bridge. As Kirk is walking to Chekov, Sulu then passes Kirk from the opposite side of the bridge, walking to the helm.
Continuity mistake: When the turbolift carrying Kirk and Uhura arrives at the bridge, Kirk's arms are folded across his chest. In the next shot, Kirk's arms are at his side.
Factual error: When Chandler is looking through his rangefinder at the Italian passenger liner, the lat-long coordinates indicated in the lower left corner of the display are quickly decrementing, meaning they couldn't possibly indicate a current GPS location. In addition, the numbers are nowhere near the coordinates Chandler gives when he attempts to hail the passenger liner ("48° north, 15° west").
Continuity mistake: When Chandler is on the vidcom with the president, the digital clocks on the wall behind her only tick to 20 seconds into the 10th minute of the hour, then reset back to zero seconds.
Plot hole: After the nuclear missile has overshot the ship and is determined to be heading for land, a map on a computer display gives an indication of the missile's trajectory relative to the Nathan James and western Europe. After the nuclear detonation, an external shot shows the blast is to the port side of the ship, giving the impression the ship is on a southern bearing off the west coast of France. At the time of detonation, the bridge crew shield their eyes while facing the front of the bridge, which would give the impression the ship is pointed right at the blast rather than off the port side. Later, Master Chief Jeter reports that the jet stream is pushing the radiation north-northeast, as if to indicate the ship is currently sitting in the fallout zone, when this would actually be pushing the radiation cloud away from the Nathan James.
Continuity mistake: While trying to restart the engines after the ship is hit by the nuke's EMP, Chandler is checking the fuses while Chung is going through his checklist. There are only five visible fuses in the six available slots in the panel that Chandler is checking. After he gives the order for Chung to "give it a kick-start," the slot which previously had no fuse now does, only for it to shoot out from the start attempt.
Continuity mistake: When Bo Gentry is in batting practice at Turner Field, the PowerBall lottery prize value indicated at the top of the building changes from $540 million to $500 in the same scene.
Factual error: The geography around the VLA in New Mexico is actually relatively flat - in fact one of the reasons why the array complex is there is because the land is flat. The canyon in the film was actually Canyon de Chelly, in Arizona, more than 170 miles (270 km) away. But in the film, when Ellie goes to the canyon, the radio antennas seem to be right there, insinuating that the canyon is part of the VLA's magical desert scenery.
Continuity mistake: While receiving the prime number pulses, there is a discontinuity between the pulse sequence being received and what is displayed on the monitors. As the sequence for "seven" starts (right after Ellie tells Fish to start counting the pulses), the camera switches to a computer monitor display which indicates the sequence for "seven" has already completed, and is logging the pulses of the sequence for "eleven".
