Batman (1989)

Question: The answer is not given in the film, but does it explain in the early scripts why Jack shot his parents but not Bruce? If not, what was Joe Chill's reason for shooting Thomas Wayne in Batman Begins?

Gibson Rickenbacker

Answer: It's unlikely there was anything in the script addressing this. In the Batman universe and the various interpretations, there's never been a definitive explanation. In the original lore, Bruce Wayne's parents were the victims of a random mugging by Joe Chill, who, for whatever reason, murdered the Waynes, probably unintentionally. Maybe he was startled or Mr. Wayne attempted to subdue him. He may have been mentally unstable and acted impulsively. Bruce was probably spared because many hesitate to kill a child. Chill may have considered Bruce too young to remember specific details. Something could have scared him off. However, this really has to be seen through the lens of a writer. The plot requires that Bruce survive the ordeal in order to grow up and become Batman. His parents' murders shaped and motivated everything in his life from that point on. Otherwise, there would be no story to tell.

Answer: There's a fan theory that Bruce Wayne projects his parents' killer onto all his enemies, so whoever he's fighting at that particular moment killed his parents.

Home Alone (1990)

Answer: It's never revealed in the film, but director Chris Columbus recently did an interview in which he said that he and John Hughes had discussions about it and imagined Kate is a "very successful fashion designer," and Peter worked in advertising (though Columbus said he couldn't remember if they had a specific job in mind for him).

Answer: Adding to the other answer, it was a trip to Paris for more than 9 people; it was Peter's brother Rob who paid for a total of 15 plane tickets to Paris. Two tickets were purchased for 2 of Rob's kids: Heather and Rod (3 other siblings are in Paris), as they were still in school in the States. Six tickets for Uncle Frank, Aunt Leslie, and their 4 kids. Seven tickets for Peter, Kate, and their 5 kids: Buzz, Megan, Linnie, Jeff, and Kevin (his unused ticket was accidentally tossed in the trash during the pizza dinner mess).

Batman Returns (1992)

Question: It is never explained why Catwoman hates Batman enough to attack him during their first encounter. A day or two earlier, when she was just Selina Kyle, Batman had actually saved her from one of the thugs rioting in Gotham City, so there is no reason for her to be so aggressive towards him (other than the fact that the audience expects them to be enemies, which is no explanation at all). Why does she?

Gibson Rickenbacker

Answer: Not to be rude... but did you somehow miss the part where she just blew up a building and Batman is trying to catch her for it? Of course, she's gonna fight back and be aggressive... she doesn't want to get caught. (Although she is also very seductive to him).

TedStixon

Answer: She was in a rage against all men, her boyfriend dumped her and her boss threw her out of a window. She attacked a mugger and felt hatred for the female victim for being afraid. She felt invincible after blowing up the building and was not going to let a man in a bat suit stop her. After falling off the building, he saved her life. That's when the sexual attraction began.

True Lies (1994)

Answer: Most likely from Juno Skinner. When Harry approached her in Washington, he gave a business card, his cover identity, which most likely contained his phone and address numbers.

In all fairness, any guesses I would have would be strictly speculation. But this is likely not the answer. As we saw in the movie, Harry's fake job came complete with a phone number and a fake secretary, who Helen knew by name. If Harry went through those lengths to hide his identity from his own wife, surely there would not be any clues on a fake business card that could lead a terrorist to him. Even Juno herself mentioned that Harry "checked out OK."

Blade Runner (1982)

Answer: It was probably a matter of public record or a big company she worked for would have some connections to find out.

Yes, but police addresses are not given to the public.

Gibson Rickenbacker

This response is nonsensical. I know a cop and literally just Googled him and found his address in seconds. You can find pretty much anyone's address easily today... It'd probably be even easier in a futuristic society with more advanced technology. Saying "police addresses are not given to the public" means nothing when they're literally public record.

Batman (1989)

Answer: According to screenwriter Sam Ham, Batman started out solo in the comics.

Gibson Rickenbacker

Answer: In addition to the other answers, it may also be a factor that around this time the "current" Robin, Jason Todd, wasn't very popular, to the extent that a phone poll was taken which ended up with him being killed off not long before this film was released. Batman was Robin-less in the comics from 1988 - 1991. Given Robin's lack of popularity and strong association with the Adam West Batman series, the filmmakers may well have felt that a clean slate would be a better approach.

Answer: Probably because this was the first movie in the series. It sets up the entire Batman premise and goes into Wayne's backstory before he met Robin. Adding Robin at this point would only clutter and confuse the plot. It would also slow the action and diminish the conflict between Batman and the Joker. Robin being introduced later allows for his own history to be better incorporated into the overall story.
