Corrected entry: Yvette mentions that she got a job at a restaurant gutting chickens. She also mentions that she's getting $100 a week. If she were to work 40 hours a week, that would make her pay $2.50 an hour, which is so far below minimum wage it's unbelievable.

Correction: You're assuming she's working 40 hours a week. She may not be. She could be only working part time, and at 20 hours a week, that would be $5.15 an hour, or what the minimum wage was in Washington DC at that time. Also, some service industries, such as restaurants, were not required to pay minimum wage to employees with reasonable expectation of earning tips. In 2013, a server at a restaurant in the USA, who may receive tips, can earn as little as $2.13 an hour, as long as tips bring the wage up to or above $7.25 an hour. If a person makes more than $30 a month in tips, these minimum wages can apply. This is federal law, states can set their own rates.
