General questions

I am looking for a movie that was a direct to DVD movie. It had 3 or 4 stories in it. I remember the first story had a man fighting toy soldiers in his penthouse apartment. The last story had a couple where their car broke down in a small town. The town was being run by dead celebrities (Elvis was the sheriff) and the celebrities forced the visitors to stay and watch them perform every night. Anybody know the name of this movie?

SAZOO1975

Chosen answer: These stories were not from a movie, but from an anthology series called "Nightmares and Dreamscapes" that was shown on TNT in 2006. All of the episodes are based on Stephen King short stories. The first one you mentioned is called "Battleground" and the second one is called "You Know They Got a Hell of a Band".

General questions

A movie question. I thought that when a movie goes straight to DVD/video/Blue Ray instead of being shown in theaters first, it's because critics gave it very bad reviews. However, there are some movies that continue to have several sequels coming out on DVD, such as the Beethoven dog movies and the Bring It On movies. Why do movie companies continue to produce them when the previous two or three sequels didn't make it to the theaters?

Answer: Because it costs a lot less money to send it direct to video than to release it into theatres. There are high distribution costs associated with a theatrical release. A great many movies make more money on their DVD release than on their theatrical run. In the end, it's all about profit.

General questions

I am looking for the title of a made for TV movie (Lifetime) which Tina Yothers was in. I remember that she was tried out for a cheerleading squad and did not make it but she told her parents that she did. She actually was like the assistant or something. But then her parents came to her school to see her cheer and the whole squad locks one of the mean cheerleaders in a closet so that she can cheer for that game. Does this sound familiar? I remember a small scene when the squad was taking a group picture and they all had on white uniforms and the mean cheerleader shows up in her red uniform so that she could stand out in the picture.

Answer: The movie is "Laker Girls" from 1990.

General questions

I'm looking for this movie I saw when I was a kid, it's possibly made in the 80's, maybe even earlier. In the beginning, this kid who is home alone is on the phone with his friend and he hears something in his house that distracts him. So he puts the phone down to go look and there's this miniature red car in his living room along with this machine thing. He gets in and starts looking in the car and it had these tokens that he was supposed to put in the machine, which he does and he somehow goes through this portal in which I'm pretty sure he turns into an animation and has this whole adventure as a cartoon boy, which I can't remember any part of. Anyway, in the end he comes back and his friend is still on hold. He picks up the phone and starts to tell his friend about this long adventure and the friend is confused and says that he's only been on hold for a couple seconds, or something to that affect. Any info will help, nobody I've told has heard of this and thinks I'm crazy. Thanks.

Answer: It sounds very much like "The Phantom Tollbooth" which was made in 1970, starring Butch Patrick (Eddie Munster).

General questions

I am looking for the name of a made-for-TV movie that started with the words "The Rape of ___", about a police detective who has a very cavalier attitude about rape until he is cornered in a basement by two criminals (and is without backup) and is taunted and raped by these men. The movie deals with his emotional/psychological problems as a result of his ordeal. The actor that played the lead role should have received an award, but I don't think he did and have never seen the movie again.

Answer: The movie is "The Rape of Richard Beck" starring Richard Crenna, from 1985.

General questions

I remember watching a cartoon quite some time back now. I remember that it was about a dentists, or something similar, and I remember there being a lot of children in it. It stuck in my mind because it reminded me an awful lot of Dr. Katz, although aimed at a younger audience. Does anyone have any idea what this show is? I seem to remember it was quite short lived. The only solid thing I can remember about the show itself was that there was a receptionist who I think was married to the dentist/doctor (and it's not Home Movies).

Gary O'Reilly

Chosen answer: I think you are referring to 'Bob and Margaret' which was an animated British show about a dentist and his chiropodist wife which ran from 1998-2001.

General questions

I am looking for the name of a horror movie. I only remember that it looked like it was made in the 70's or 80's and that the first girl who got killed off was stabbed in the heart and fell through a large stained glass window on the ceiling with a cord tied around her neck so it looked like she hung herself. Any ideas?

Answer: The name of this film is 'Suspiria'. It was directed by Dario Argento and it came out in 1977.
