What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? (1962)
Directed by: Robert Aldrich
Starring: Bette Davis, Joan Crawford, Victor Buono, Wesley Addy
Continuity mistake: In the first scene featuring next door neighbor Mrs. Bates, she places the telephone on the coffee table twice.
Continuity mistake: When Victor Buono circles the ad Jane placed in the paper, the only way to contact her listed in the ad is a phone number. However, when his mother calls acting as his secretary to schedule him an appointment for 4:00, no one gives or asks for an appointment.
Suggested correction: Jane's address is never given in the call, but Buono shows up at the house looking at a paper to find her location. The time of 4 o'clock is established in the call. (Just watched the scene again to be sure).
The address is not given in the call or is it printed in the paper. How did Flagg know where Jane lived?
White pages of the phone book.
Trivia: The teenage neighbour to the Hudson sisters is Bette Davis' real-life daughter, Barbara Merrill.
Jane: I'll bring in some tea. You like tea?
Edwin Flagg: Oh, yes. I'm quite fond of tea. You must have guessed that I'm English.
Jane: Oh, really? How nice for you.
Jane: You mean all this time we could have been friends?
Newspaper Clerk: Who the hell was Baby Jane Hudson?
Question: At the end of the film, Joan Crawford/Blanche lies on the beach, brutalized and starved by Bette Davis/Jane. Does Blanche then die, or will Blanche continue to live? For that matter, Jane is still alive, (although probably insane), so what will happen to Jane?
Answer: Blanche's fate is left ambiguous, so it's impossible to say if she survived or not. It is not revealed in the original novel. Jane would most likely be institutionalized, seeing as she is suffering a complete break from reality at the end of the film.
