Factual error: In one scene Alvin is driving over a bridge on the Mississippi. He is going in to Prarie Du Chine but the bridge is in a different town, and he is going from east to west not west to east. The town he is driving into is Lansing, Iowa.

Continuity mistake: After Alvin zooms down the hill with his tractor, Danny Riordan and four other people help him. Other mistake: In the ending credits of this movie, it says "Cast (in order of appearance)" and the first character to be mentioned is Rose, whereas, in the beginning of the movie, Dorothy is the first one on the screen, and, the first person who talks.
Trivia: Richard Farnsworth earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor for his portrayal as Alvin Straight. At the age of 79, Farnsworth was at the time the oldest person to be nominated for a Best Actor Oscar.
Alvin Straight: I want to thank you for your kindness to a stranger.
Danny Riordan, Clermont Resident: It's been a genuine pleasure having you here, Alvin. Write to us some time.
Alvin Straight: I will.
Danny Riordan, Clermont Resident: Well, you know, Alvin, there's a lot of hills bigger than Clairmont's between here and Zion. Even if you get that mower running again, it might still break down.
Alvin Straight: Well, you're a kind man talking to a stubborn man.
Alvin: I'd give each one of 'em a stick and, one for each one of 'em, then I'd say, 'You break that.' Course they could real easy. Then I'd say, 'Tie them sticks in a bundle and try to break that.' Course they couldn't. Then I'd say, "That bundle... that's family."
