Soul Surfer plays like an extended Hallmark card-pretty, well-meaning, sweet but a touch overboard on trying to feel good. AnnaSophia Robb plays the plucky and lovely Bethanny, who lives to surf and is a rising star who loses one of her arms in a shark attack. She barely lets her sudden change of fortunes affect her, and her family provides strong support through her good times and challenging times. Therein lies a problem dramatically-she's so unflappable and Pollyanna-like at times that she comes across as less affected than she should be, and her family and friends seem almost underdeveloped and predictable, lending the movie a made-for-family-TV feel. Still, the story is heartening and positive overall, and might even inspire someone who has gone through serious setbacks to overcome them.

amazing and touching!

Revealing mistake: When Bethany comes home from the hospital after losing her arm, her dad drives them to the back of the house to avoid the reporters. Bethany has her arm covered up with a throw so it can't be seen. When she gets out of the car, you can clearly see the outline of her entire arm underneath the throw.

Trivia: The real Bethany Hamilton has a cameo appearance in the scene in Thailand when Bethany and Sarah are handing out food. She is holding a box of supplies and wearing a hat, walking across the screen at the beginning of the scene.
