Continuity mistake: When Jake is walking up to the Tree of Souls to ask Eywa for help, he kneels and reaches for his braid as if it were hanging over his shoulder when it is lying down his back. The angle changes and it is now over his shoulder. When he stands up as Neytiri tells him that Eywa protects the balance of life, it's suddenly down his back again.
Continuity mistake: When Eytukan orders Jake and Grace to be tied up, Tsu'tey and another Na'vi grab Jake and bind his wrists, his right on top. It switches to Eytukan shouting a war cry, and goes back to Jake; his left wrist is now on top.
Continuity mistake: When Jake's avatar is running through the garden as he first enjoys having working legs again, he skids to a stop on the loose topsoil in the aisle of the garden. The next shot that shows him wriggling his toes in the soil reveals a pristine path of soil and no evidence of the disturbance his skidding to a stop caused.
Continuity mistake: There is a scene where Jake and Grace are tied up by the natives, shortly after they are cut down, Jake pushes Grace over a log to avoid an explosion, the shot changes to something else, then returning to the log, and we see that he's pushing her again. then the shot continues.
Continuity mistake: In the colonel's robot there is a rear-view mirror. When we see the robot from the outside, it is very close to his head. But when we see shots from inside the robot, there is plenty of room around his head and we don't see the mirror.
Continuity mistake: When Jake tames Toruk, he confronts the Na'vi and speaks to Tsutey. While Jake is speaking to Tsutey, Tsutey's braids are over his shoulder. After Jake says "You are Oloektan," all but a single braid are behind his shoulder. After this, when Tsutey looks at the Toruk in the distance, a braid or two fall over his shoulder, in the next cut no braids are over his shoulder.
Other mistake: While flying the helicopters, notice that the human pilots are not wearing protective masks in an open cockpit with the cargo doors wide open as the Avatars are either hanging out of, or staining to see past the pilots.
Suggested correction: This has been submitted and corrected three separate times. The cockpit is sealed off from the outside.
Baloney. The movie made several egregious errors involving the use of masks. In several scenes you see them not wearing masks in human form including going into the lab at the floating mountains. Everyone including Trudy should have been dead within minutes.
Other mistake: In the scene after Jake first links to his Avatar body and they are getting ready to put the Avatar's to rest, Grace gets the human scientists to 'scat' and shuts two large gates behind them. There is a CGI error with Grace's left hand. Her hand is not holding the gate handle but is pulling it shut anyway.
Continuity mistake: When Sigourney Weaver is shot in the stomach, she is not wearing make-up. When she is transported to the Tree of Life and laid under it for possible rejuvenation, she is wearing mascara.
Continuity mistake: When Jake is learning to ride on the direhorse, after he is corrected when calling she a he, and is hit on the head by the direhorse's queue, his braid slips over his right shoulder, but next shot the braid has returned to his back.
Deliberate mistake: When Selfridge says "Pull the plug" after Hometree is destroyed, two soldiers, one male and one female, go to shut off Jake and Grace's avatar links. The female soldier goes straight to Grace's link and terminates it, but the male soldier gets delayed (punched by Norm) before he can terminate Jake's link. This is deliberately shown out of sequence - we see Jake's link terminated before Grace's. The result is that we see Grace's avatar fall unconscious when Jake's link is terminated, and Jake's avatar fall unconscious when Grace's link is terminated.
Character mistake: Grace is doing something 'scientific' in the background while Jake is submitting his video report. She holds a filled pipette upside down, which caused some mirth with the biologists watching the movie with me. The pipette is always held with the opening downwards, because if you turn it upside-down, liquid may flow into the pipette mechanism and contaminate it, or become contaminated. Grace however turned the pipette with opening upwards, which is not what a professional scientist would do.
Other mistake: When Michelle Rodriguez is flying the copter she doesn't have a mask on when they are at the tree of life to shoot down the tree. The machine gunner has his mask on. It's an open cockpit.
Factual error: During the hometree bombing, the "sky people" throw gas grenades at the N'avi. It's a cool tactic but because of the helicopter blades rotating right above them, the gas would just get blown away therefore making it a useless thing to use in the war.
Other mistake: During the battle between the marines and the Navi, colonel Quaritch shoots down Trudy's ship. Despite her cockpit having bullet holes in it, somehow she is still able to breathe. Unlike Quaritch when Jake sticks the knife into his AMP.
Visible crew/equipment: When Trudy is firing up the gunship when helping Jake and co escaping from the Company HQ, a microphone is visible under Trudy's tank top, near her right breast.
