Continuity mistake: Before the '89 basketball game, in the first shot of Mike joining the cheerleaders on court, the bare chested guy wearing a Native American headdress is dancing beside the free throw lane, near the backboard. In the next shot that guy is now dancing half a court away, in front of the stairs opposite center circle (note the "Lets win" poster). The same thing happens a few shots later. (00:02:35)
Continuity mistake: At the start, while the cheerleaders are doing their thing center court, before Mike joins them he is standing with his arm on Ned's shoulder, leaning on him. Then, in a shot of the cheerleaders he is seen in the background standing with his arms crossed, but when it cuts to a different angle he has his arm on Ned's shoulder once again. (00:02:20)
Continuity mistake: In the gym at the start, when Mike is shooting baskets by himself (before the team photo) he is standing beside a 3-tier basketball rack, off which he grabs the basketballs for warming up. There is shot from behind him as he reaches for a ball and the top tier is empty, but in the next front shot the top tier is full, then as Coach Murphy walks in the top tier is empty again. (00:00:45)
Continuity mistake: At the start in the gym, when Mike is alone shooting baskets (before the team photo) he is standing at the center of the 3-point line, but in each of the overhead close-ups of the hoop we see Mike's reflection in the backboard (top right) and he is standing closer to the hoop, on the free throw line - note the dark free throw lane. (Only visible on DVD widescreen.) (00:00:30)
Factual error: After Mike's dance routine with the cheerleaders, his coach says, "Hey Vanilla Ice, get over here." But Vanilla Ice wasn't a star until 1990, when "Ice Ice Baby" was released. No one would have heard of him in 1989.
Continuity mistake: During the scene where Mike smashes his boss' earpiece, in the splitsecond shot when Mike smashes it he has a notable shadow beneath his hand. When the boss looks at it, no shadow whatsoever. (00:09:40)
Continuity mistake: During Mike's victory party, at one point you can see Mike in the back holding up a lightsaber. In the next shot when he says "Don't touch the toys," it is now down by his torso. (01:10:50)
Continuity mistake: After the fight with Stan, Mike gets sent to the principal's office. There is a poster behind him that says "Your Career For Life Is" and at the bottom, a star. In the first shot, the poster is above Mike's head, but then in the next shot, Mike's head is covering the star. (00:48:15)
Continuity mistake: When Ned is telling Mike that he will never return to Hayden, he is sitting on a chair with lights that are shining on his cheeks. In the shot from behind, they aren't. (00:25:40)
Continuity mistake: When Ned calls off the Hummer it is immediately in the street behind the Principal, but was completely absent in every shot before that as you can see the street behind her it wasn't there.
Continuity mistake: Just after "Mark" tells Scarlet about Alex's new girlfriend at the victory party, there's a shot of Jane's blue car (headed to Ned's home) as it nears the intersection, which is a short distance away. It cuts to an interior shot of Jane and Ned in the car discussing 'Halo', and through Jane's open window we see the distance she is driving and the side street view. It then cuts back to the shot of them nearing the intersection and two problems arise: one, in the close-up they drive a far greater distance than they do between the exterior shots, and two, the view outside Jane's window differs as well. (01:16:50)
Continuity mistake: After Naomi arrives, as she and Scarlet walk toward the house, when she tells Scarlet, "You got the butt of a 12 yr old boy," Naomi's handbag is dangling on her right forearm and she is carrying her overnight bag in her left hand (viewer's right). However, in the next shot her handbag is up on her right shoulder and she's carrying the overnight bag in her right hand. (00:15:50)
Continuity mistake: In 1989, when Ned walks in, he takes off his brown dungeon-master jacket and puts on a blue sweater. In the first shot, he has it fully on, but when he walks toward the basketball team he is putting the right sleeve on again. (00:01:50)
Continuity mistake: When Ned and Mike are fighting with the lightsabers, Mike hits Ned with his lightsaber and he falls to the floor. When you see the shot of Ned falling, look at Mike. He is only holding his saber with one hand. In the next shot, you see him with both hands on his saber. (00:20:35)
Continuity mistake: After the initial meeting with Principal Masterson, when Ned and Mike, in his bedazzled shirt, stand at the top of the stairs talking about how awful Mike looks, the same teens (girl in a pink hoodie) pass them two shots later. (00:30:05)
Continuity mistake: Scar and Naomi arrive home from happy hour, where Mark is playing 1 on 1 basketball in the driveway. As Naomi exits the driver's side, a small piece of paper falls out onto the floor. In the next shot, it's gone.
Visible crew/equipment: After Mike and Alex get home, when Scarlet walks in and asks Alex how the tryouts went, the tape mark is visible on the floor in front of Alex, while he's sitting. (Visible on fullscreen version.)
Continuity mistake: Before Scarlet's date arrives, during the dance when Mike spins her in his arms, in a few shots Scarlet's hands are atop one another on Mike's shoulder and her bracelet is at her wrist, but in-between those shots in one shot her hands are apart gripping his shoulder and her bracelet is up on her forearm. (00:56:45)
Continuity mistake: After being accepted to Hayden High, when Ned says, "You always had my back in high school, if your spirit guide...," Mike's left hand is up at his mouth in the shot facing Ned. In the next shot Mike crosses his arms, but when it cuts his hand is back up at his mouth. (00:30:30)
Continuity mistake: During Mike and Ned's lightsabre duel, when Mike kicks Ned just after Ned says, "Covered by the local news," the chair in the kitchen behind him faces the foosball table (in the next room) with its back against the counter, yet in the previous shots that chair faces the front door. (00:20:20)
Answer: I've not seen the movie, but an ex-wife would be closer to her ex-husband than a coach to his old student, no matter how good.
