Continuity mistake: In the opening scene where the professor asks Ben "what can you tell me that's gonna dazzle me?" they sit in his office with a lit fireplace behind Ben, who wears a suit and tie. When that scene continues at the end of the movie with Ben answering that question, he is shown sitting in a totally different environment and outfit. (00:07:20 - 01:53:38)
Continuity mistake: In the bar birthday cake scene Cam is handed a piece of cake twice. (00:10:45)
Continuity mistake: When Ben and Jill want to leave the hotel after the chase, they are forced by Cole to leave the bag behind. When they don't agree, he reveals a gun at his belt. In the next shot, a close-up, the opened jacket and his right hand changes. (01:55:05)
Continuity mistake: When Prof. Rosa calls Cole, Terry answers the phone and places Rosa on hold. However, when Cole takes the phone from Terry, he does not take Rosa off of hold and proceeds to talk to him.
Continuity mistake: During the scene in which Ben is introduced to the card-counting group, several members are sitting at a blackjack table. There are cards on the table in front of them. In the first shot, the cards are face up, in the next, they are face down, then they appear face up again. While no one is seen or heard dealing cards, the number of cards on the table changes in several shots.
Visible crew/equipment: In the very beginning of the movie, Ben is seen riding his bike over the bridge in an aerial shot. Near the top of the screen, if you look carefully at the end of the bridge you can see a police barricade at the end of the bridge. It is there because the bridge is closed for filming.
Factual error: Jill tells Ben that she has a suite at the Hard Rock and asks if he would like to see it. In the next scene it shows her looking out the window (presumably at the Hard Rock) and seeing the fountains of the Bellagio. This is not possible as these two resorts are almost two miles apart on different roads.
Continuity mistake: During the first meeting with Ben, the cards that Micky deals alternate from face up, face down, and missing alltogether.
Continuity mistake: The subway scenes between Jill and Ben show someone in a coat with black and white squares get on the train. However, a later scene shot throughout the subway car's window shows this same person wearing the same type of coat sitting down on a bench with a friend at the subway station as the train pulls away.
Continuity mistake: When Ben is handed his earnings from the first night a five dollar bill is seen on the outside of the bundle. Moments later a $100 is on the outside.
Revealing mistake: When Jill gives Ben the money after the first night, you can see it is just a $100 bill wrapped around a bunch of $1 dollar bills.
Other mistake: In the opening scene, Ben is seen riding his bike over the Mass Ave Bridge from Boston towards Cambridge, at MIT. A few moments later, he is seen coming over another bridge (the John Weeks footbridge) from Boston into Cambridge, at Harvard. There would be no reason for him to ride into Cambridge over the Charles River at MIT and then seconds later be riding into Cambridge over the Charles River at Harvard.
Factual error: When they first arrive at the casino, Ben falls down the stairs with his suitcase into the casino. He would have never been able to walk into a casino with a suitcase. The guard would have stopped him right away and told him that he couldn't bring it in.
Factual error: In the scene when Ben was at the blackjack table, he had blackjack and if you look carefully at the chips that he received, he received 2 $5,000 chips, 2 $1,000 chips and a $500 chip for a total of $12,500. Blackjack pays 3 to 2, so there is no way you could have a $12,500 payout on a blackjack. Ben would have had to bet $8,333.33 in order to get a payout of $12,500, which would have been impossible.
Suggested correction: The actual bet that he made was for $25,000, so if you look carefully, there were 5 blue chips ($5,000) and next to it was another $25,000 in $5,000 chips, and then the $12,500 extra, for a total of $37,500.
Visible crew/equipment: At the bar where the 21st birthday is being celebrated, you will see the microphone/boom come into the shot from the top of the screen. This happens while the "mom" is passing out the cut pieces of cake. It has a bright colored wind screen on it.
Plot hole: After Ben loses the money and he and Mickey get into a fight, Ben talks the rest of the MIT players to risk their own money and take all of the reward instead of giving 50% of the take to Mickey. Kianna says they need at least 100 grand to play - where did they get this money from? The movie leads you to believe that Ben lost all of Mickey's money on their first night there, so they have no winnings with them. Ben's money is back in his dorm room, and you could assume the rest of them don't all have bank accounts with cash sitting in them for IRS reasons.
