Factual error: When JLH visits Missy at her home Missy says she went to Southport High, but in the July 4th celebrations the marching band has a banner which reads East Brunswick High School. A bit strange that a "small fishing village" would have two high schools for the simple fact that well the town probably couldn't afford it and it's pointless to have two when the village is so small. Factually, Southport does indeed have just one high school - South Brunswick High. See http://schooltree.org/NC-BRUNSWICK.html.
Suggested correction: It says North Brunswick High School on the banner, which is located in Leland, NC. About 20 minutes north of Southport in Brunswick County. North Brunswick High School band participates in the Southport 4th of July parade.
Revealing mistake: When Julie is in the room filled with ice, some of it jiggles when she moves it, probably a prop made of jelly.
Continuity mistake: When Julie comes home and finds the letter, her lips are pale and she is not wearing lipstick. When the shot shifts focus from the letter to her face again, however, she is wearing purplish lipstick.
Continuity mistake: When the Fisherman jumps out at the girl in the store when he is in the plastic bag, he misses and falls to the floor. If you look at the Fisherman when he is on the floor and waving his arms notice he isn't carrying his hook. However, in the next shot when he is standing up, the hook is in his hand again.
Plot hole: There's no way the fisherman got Max's body in and out of the trunk in that small amount of time and somehow opens the trunk even when it shows Julie shutting the trunk and running with her keys.
Continuity mistake: Ray falls off Ben's boat towards the end. Yet when he gets back on board he's dry.
Plot hole: David Egan's obituary states he was in his twenties when he died, much younger than Ben Willis, the actual hit-and-run victim. This should have clued in that David was not the person they ran over.
Continuity mistake: When Julie gets on Ben's boat, she sees a picture of Helen at the parade from that day. This implies Ben took a picture at the parade, got it developed, then went back and killed Barry and Helen. There's no way.
Other mistake: When Ben gets run over, he has numerous bloody scars on his face, but near the end he only has one scar, going across the top of his right head to the bottom of his left face, no way he would only have one scar after a collision like that.
Continuity mistake: When Ben gets run over his body is shown hitting the windshield but when they find his body it's shown that his face took all the damage.
