Revealing mistake: When Troy says "I'll sing with her," Ms. Darbus turns around "in response" to his voice before he even says anything.
High School Musical (2006)
Plot summary
Directed by: Kenny Ortega
Starring: Zac Efron, Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Tisdale, Lucas Grabeel, Corbin Bleu
East High School are preparing for their winter break, and Troy, the captain of the basketball team, is enjoying his last day before vacation. However, fate intervenes when Gabriella, a new transfer student, and her mother happen to stop by East High. While Gabriella's mother talks to the school's principal, Gabriella accidentally bumps into Troy, dropping her books. They share a brief moment, and Gabriella is intrigued by Troy's kindness. As Gabriella leaves, the principal notices her exceptional academic background, and decides to introduce her to the school.
After the winter break, East High returns to school, and Troy and Gabriella meet again in their homeroom class, much to their surprise. They discover they have a mutual interest in singing, but both feel pressured to conform to the expectations of their respective cliques. Troy wants to focus on basketball, and Gabriella wants to focus on her academics. Nevertheless, they decide to secretly audition for the upcoming winter musical, much to the disapproval of their friends.
Each facing their own challenges, Troy struggles with balancing basketball and singing, while Gabriella faces the judgment of her academic decathlon teammates, who believe she is abandoning them. Despite their reservations, they attend the auditions and impress Drama Club president, Sharpay Evans, and her twin brother, Ryan Evans, with their talent. However, the only way Gabriella and Troy can secure the roles of the leads is if they reveal their secret to the entire school.
As rumors spread about Troy and Gabriella's involvement in the musical, their friends are both surprised and disappointed. Chad Danforth, Troy's best friend and basketball teammate, feels betrayed, and Taylor McKessie, Gabriella's academic decathlon teammate, believes Gabriella is jeopardizing her future. The school is divided between supporting the musical or dismissing it as a distraction from other activities.
During rehearsals, Troy and Gabriella face numerous obstacles, ranging from conflicts with Sharpay and Ryan, to overcoming their own insecurities. Despite the challenges, they find solace and encouragement in each other's company and continue to grow closer.
As the day of the final callback auditions approaches, Troy's father, who also happens to be the basketball coach, confronts him about his lack of focus on basketball. Troy begins to question his own desires and feels torn between his love for Gabriella and his passion for basketball.
On the day of the callbacks, Sharpay schemes to ensure her and Ryan's victory by sabotaging Troy and Gabriella's performance. However, the couple manages to persevere and deliver a stunning performance, winning the support of the teachers and their friends. The school rallies behind them, and even Chad and Taylor, realizing they were wrong to judge, offer their support.
At the final basketball game, Troy's teammates, inspired by his dedication, decide to focus on playing as a team rather than solely relying on Troy. In a thrilling match, East High wins, and Troy and Gabriella are crowned as the leads in the musical. Both their friends and parents are now fully supportive, understanding their true interests and aspirations.
The film concludes with the premiere of the musical, "Twinkle Towne," where Troy and Gabriella's performance is a resounding success. The entire school celebrates the triumph while Sharpay and Ryan learn the importance of teamwork and friendship. Troy and Gabriella confess their love for each other on stage, resolving to pursue both their passions together.
Sharpay: We need to save our show from people who don't know the difference between a Tony Award and Tony Hawk.
Trivia: In the cafeteria, all the milk cartons had a lemon and lime drink in them. The reason for this is that if they were filled with real milk, it would have turned sour during filming.
Question: Chad tries to discourage Troy from singing with the line, "If you sing in musicals, you're going to end up in my mom's refrigerator." Any clue as to what this means?

Answer: When Chad brings up Michael Crawford (the iconic Phantom in musical performances of Phantom of the Opera) he points out that Crawford's picture has never been on cereal (Wheaties) boxes like popular athletes. Chad says that his mom saw Phantom of the Opera on Broadway 27 times, and she put Crawford's picture "in" her refrigerator. So then Chad tells Troy that if he plays basketball his picture will end up on a cereal box, but if he sings in musicals his picture will only end up in his mom's (or anyone's) refrigerator. Apparently since Chad's mom was nuts about Michael Crawford, one of her "crazy diet ideas" was to put Crawford's picture in the fridge to help her stick to her diet.
