Monster

Continuity mistake: In the scene where Charlize Theron and Christina Ricci are in the car and Christina is driving, the camera pans to Charlize smoking a cigarette. The first shot it is half way done, the 2nd time it is at the filter and then again half way done and then it's gone and she lights a brand new one. (01:10:05)

Continuity mistake: When the red Pontiac Grand Am crashes, the car changes model. The red Grand Am they are riding in before they get to the crash scene is a 1992-1995 model (1996s got a facelift). During and after the crash scene, it is a 1989-1991 model. Prior to 1989 the front end was more squared off and the back end was different (1985-1988's had red rear turn signals instead of amber and the license plate was mounted between the taillights, not down below the bumper as it is on 1989-1991's). (01:10:10 - 01:12:10)

Continuity mistake: When the Grand Am crash is viewed from behind, the bush is completely under the rear bumper, otherwise only a few branches are. (01:11:30)

Kristal

Continuity mistake: Right after they crash the red Grand Am, one shot from behind the car shows the rear plate as 34516C; later when they are abandoning the car and Aileen is taking the plate off the car, the plate is DZB 86R. (01:12:05)

Continuity mistake: Just after they have trashed the red car, Lee and Selby go into the bedroom of the motel and Selby sits on the bed. Lee opens the wardrobe and then starts talking to Selby. If you look closely, you can see the door she opened is sometimes fully open, half open or closed, especially as there seems to be a metallic rack on the inside of it which makes it quite obvious when it's open. (01:13:20 - 01:14:10)

David Mercier

Continuity mistake: Disappearing shot..After the car crash and after Aileen tells Selby about the other victims in the bedroom, she goes into the living room and pours two shots into two different shot glasses. Then when they cut back to her one shot glass is missing. (01:14:15)

Continuity mistake: In one scene where Lee and Selby are talking in the street outside Selby's house, when the camera is on Lee it's bright and sunny out, but when it's on Selby it's overcast and there are no shadows.

Krista

Continuity mistake: When Lee is riding in the red car with the John, there is rain on his side of the car. When the camera is on Lee, there is no rain on her side.

Continuity mistake: When Lee and Selby are talking at the table in the skating rink, from one angle Lee's hand is up under her chin but in the reverse angle it's down.

Krista

Continuity mistake: As they crash the Grand Am, they narrowly miss a blue and a red flag on the right side of the car, leaving them standing. While outside the car, you can see one of each on the ground on the left side of the car. When they drive away, you can see another blue one on the ground.

Kristal

Revealing mistake: How on Earth can Selby get those skin tight T-shirts over that huge cast on her arm? They cannot possibly stretch any more than they already are - look at the scene where she and Eileen are checking the mail. There is no way that sleeve would fit over the cast without ripping! It is well beyond the capacity of that tight T-shirt to stretch to that extent! Obviously Christina Ricci had the cast fitted after she was in costume.

Trivia: "Selby Wall", played by Christina Ricci, is a totally fictional character. She does not exist. Wuornos' lover was Tyria Moore, who is tall and stocky and looks nothing like Ricci. There is evidence that Wuornos told Moore about at least one of the murders she committed (Richard Mallory in November 1989) and she didn't report it. She agreed to make the phone call to Wuornos, taped by the police, in exchange for immunity from prosecution. This is correctly depicted in the film.

Question: Was Christina Ricci's arm cast written in the script, or was her arm really broken and they kept her in the role anyway? The cast just seems like an inconvenient and cumbersome thing for an actor to deal with, given that it really lends nothing of importance to the story.

Krista

Chosen answer: It was very relevant to the story. Because Sadie's arm was in a cast, she couldn't get a job. Without a job, she had to move back home to her parents.
