Revealing mistake: When Nick Parsons /Jonathan Devereaux knocks Libby out, if you look carefully before he puts her in the casket you can see he's holding a dummy/doll from the wide angle. (01:23:53)

littlelynnee1418

Continuity mistake: In the last scene when she meets her son, he has his head forward over her shoulder, then he turns his head to the side on her shoulder. But when the camera goes to show the front, his head is again straight over her shoulder, not sideways. (01:40:00)

Murfcin

Factual error: Ashley Judd is convicted of murdering her husband for the insurance money and that would make it a first degree murder charge (first degree meaning she planned the murder). Because of that there is no way she would have been eligible for parole after just 6 or 7 years.

Suggested correction: It's never stated that she was charged with 1st degree murder, nor that she killed her husband for the insurance money. It was only brought up in trial as motive. Nick's accident was ruled "wrongful death" and the fact she did get paroled further show she was never convicted of 1st degree murder.

And what about the phone call from prison the Libby makes to Angie, and Angie says she "was just about to call her" or she tried calling her like how the heck can you call someone in prison!?

Plot hole: For a convicted murderer who violated her parole and assaulted her parole officer while escaping custody, Ashley Judd moves around the country and even boards airplanes with little to no problems.

Suggested correction: She was simply careful. There's constant manhunts for much more serious felons and parolees on the lam who seem capable of moving around without getting caught.

How did she keep the gun if she flew across the country?

She likely put the gun in her bag and then checked it with other passengers' luggage at the airport. As long as she wasn't carrying the gun on her, it would go through.

She could have checked the gun in her luggage. Most countries and airlines allow that.

Other mistake: On two occasions in the movie, Ashley Judd slams a car into another (she drives Tommy Lee Jones' car into another and over the side of the ferry boat, and later she smashes a stolen pickup truck into the side of a car). In each case, the car she is driving emerges from the crash without a scratch on it, not even a damaged headlight.

Factual error: When Libby makes a phone call from jail, she states to the business that she is Angela Green and she wants to make sure that her severance check is mailed to the correct address. In real life, the business Libby called would've have never accepted the call under the assumed name of Angela Green because when you call ANYWHERE from jail there is an operator on the phone to tell the receiver of the call where you are calling from and who you are, and will they accept the call.

Revealing mistake: When Ashley Judd slams Tommy Lee Jones' car and tips it over, she drives off and skids dramatically to a stop. Just before she skids, you can see several skid marks on the ground from practice or previous takes.

Continuity mistake: When Libby goes to the BMW dealer, the dealer says the address is 20 Oriole Terrace. When Libby is driving down Oriole Terrace, she passes a house with four digits in the address.

Continuity mistake: In the scene where Ashley Judd leaves prison and first meets Tommy Lee Jones, she brings a box into his office full of her belongings. After he has checked through it he looks at the picture of Judd's son. When he throws it back into the box, it makes a noise as if it has hit the bottom of an empty box. In the next shot Judd picks up the box which now seems to be full with all of her belongings again, even though he hadn't put anything else back into the box.

Continuity mistake: In the opening scene where Libby is talking to Maddy. When the camera is in front of them, they're facing each other. But when the camera shows them from behind, they are sitting beside each other.

Factual error: When Libby tries to call the friend's house back after the 'resurrected' husband yanks the phone out of the wall, the tone she gets is fast beeping. That sound is the tone used when your phone hasn't been hung up properly. She should hear a ringing tone on her end since the phone she's calling is still in service.

Continuity mistake: When Libby asks Angie to adopt Maddy, in one minute her legs are up on the chair, and in the next, they're hanging down again.

Continuity mistake: When Jonathon puts Libby in the casket and she realizes where she is, she grabs her backpack to get the gun. From shot to shot the lighter she is holding goes from her left hand to her right hand to her left hand, etc.

Factual error: When Libby uses the pay phone in prison, she puts a quarter in. Prisons don't require change to use the phone.

Factual error: When the lawyer shows the bloody knife to the jury, notice it's bright red. As time passes, blood dries and gets darker. The blood looks fresh, as if the murder just happened.

Revealing mistake: The movie is set in the USA, however, when the US Coast Guard boat ends the search for the husband's body and returns to the dock, Ashley sits on a gray bin with the words "City of Langley" on the side. Those shots were filmed in Langley, British Columbia, Canada.

Other mistake: When Nick is confronted with the evidence against him at the end, Tommy Lee Jones says they found a shovel and dirt in Nick's car trunk. But Nick didn't bury her, he locked her in a concrete tomb.

Suggested correction: They were saying this was how they were gonna frame him, not what he actually just did to her.

Character mistake: The Fifth Amendment Double Jeopardy Clause does not apply. Libby could be convicted of 1st Degree murder when she gets out and pursues Nick. It doesn't really matter to the plot, however, because it was what Libby believed to be true and motivated her. Further, she ends up shooting Nick in self-defense. So it's all good.

Revealing mistake: When Libby goes to the house to kill her husband with the gun she checks the bullets. You can see the firing pin is drilled out, rendering the gun inoperable.

Question: Why did the ex husband kill his former mistress turned wife?

Rob245

Answer: Nick used Angie to help fake his death, frame Libby, and collect the insurance money which would have gone to their son, Matty. It's unclear if Nick married Angie, who became Matty's legal guardian, but he needed her to gain access to the money. He certainly didn't love her, and once he fully controlled the money, he eliminated her, as she was a liability who could have exposed him. I agree with the other answer that it also simplifies the plot by killing off a secondary character. It also shows how devious, ruthless, and sociopathic Nick is.

raywest

Answer: I don't think they explained it, but most likely for her insurance money which is the same reason Nick faked his death in the first place. But it's also possible her death was faked as well. Looking at it from the prospective of the writer, it seemed it was easier to kill her off or get rid of her somehow instead of her showing up at the end with Nick and there wouldn't be a way for Libby to kill her without facing jail time for it and it wouldn't make sense for Libby to just forgive her and let her go.

Bishop73

Angie's death wasn't faked. It was established and verified by the next-door-neighbor lady that she was killed in the house explosion while Nick and Maddy were conveniently away. Libby also researched old newspaper articles about the accident and the ensuing investigation. The articles also showed photos of the now-dead Angie.
