Other mistake: When Mike goes into the church to address the townspeople, if you look closely, one of the men is wearing a digital wristwatch. The events of this film took place in 1975, long before this type of watch would have been available. (00:57:05)
Suggested correction: Per the Smithsonian website: "in January 1976, Texas Instruments shocked its competition by introducing the first $20 watch line. The lowest price for a digital electronic watch just fifteen months earlier had been $125 and even a few months before, $49.95." So they were definitely commercially available in 1975.
Continuity mistake: When Mike Rogers's daughter is sleeping on his lap and his wife comes to ask him if he's coming to bed, in one shot the daughter is way up sleeping on his shoulder and in another, back down on his lap.
Continuity mistake: In the beginning of the movie, the pick-up truck with the four workers is speeding down the hill. In one shot you see the pick-up's right rear end slam very hard into a tree, making a large dent. But in the next scene with the car, and the rest of the movie, the dent seems to have disappeared. However, the rest of the dents on the pick-up are there all through the movie.
Visible crew/equipment: When Travis is lying on the exam table, you see the aliens ripping his clothes off. But you see the arm of one of the crew tearing his pants off.
Character mistake: Mike, despite being an experienced logger, is filing his chainsaw blade in the wrong direction. Also, he's seen filing the teeth of the blade way too many times.
