54 mistakes - chronological order

Factual error: When Maverick is flying faster than Mach 10 near the start of the film, all the screens at the base short out as those on the aircraft also do. This wouldn't happen; at worst, the screens would go blank. Most likely, a "no signal" or "no input" message would display.

Deliberate mistake: When Maverick is in the bar texting Iceman, Iceman's sentence-long responses come almost immediately after Maverick sends his messages, without enough time having elapsed for Iceman to have typed them out. Compare this to the later scene at the selectively mute Iceman's house, where he types out various sentences for Maverick to read, and the amount of time it takes him to type them out is more of what one would expect.

Suggested correction: Typing on a PC keyboard isn't the same as typing on a smartphone. The former requires proper coordination of both hands. The latter may use AI-assisted predictive suggestions and auto-correct. Microsoft's discontinued SwiftKey could predict all of Iceman's responses.

FleetCommand

Predictive text and autocorrect still wouldn't account for Iceman's responses appearing on Maverick's screen almost immediately after Maverick sends his texts to Iceman. It would still take at least a few seconds for that to happen. The reason this is a deliberate mistake because they didn't want to waste screen time showing Iceman's responses appearing in a more realistic time-frame.

Iceman's typing starts at 0:21:51 and ends at 0:21:58. That's more than long enough. Maverick is twice as fast and we see his typing on the screen. He can type a whole sentence between 0:21:58 to 0:22:01. And it seems natural to me.

FleetCommand

Maverick texts "The kid's not ready for this mission." Iceman responds "No one is," and roughly 2 seconds later a separate text appears, in which he says "That's why you're here." No amount of predictive text or autocorrect can both type out that sentence that quickly as well as deliver it to the recipient's phone.

Phaneron

First, in the real world, Iceman would be typing even as he hits the Send message. Maverick's phone would stop displaying the "Iceman is typing..." message to do the unfurl animation, but Iceman is still typing. Second, yes, Microsoft's AI-assisted SwiftKey could. Iceman types "That's" and SwiftKey guesses the rest. This degree of intelligent predication is mundane! Microsoft's IntelliCode predicts the C# code you'd want to write.

FleetCommand

Continuity mistake: Due to Rooster's slow flying in the bombing run at first, the first pair of planes has a huge lead - in the sequence of the film, 60 seconds at "bombs away" and only 25 seconds at hitting the mountain ridge. Anyway, they could not possibly be together again fighting against the SAMs, with Maverick ultimately saving Rooster. Each pair would have to fight on their own.

KnightMove

Continuity mistake: When Maverick and Rooster steal the F-14 Tomcat, Maverick adjusts the throttle to move the aircraft out of the hangar. When he does, the wing sweep lever (marked by black/yellow diagonal lines) is all the way forward: wings fully extended. When Rooster says both runways are destroyed, Maverick flips the cover up and pushes the lever forward to extend the wings, but it already was. Back means the wings are stowed, forward means the wings are extended.

Visible crew/equipment: In the final flight sequence in the F-14, the reflection of the camera equipment is in the visor of Rooster, but not Maverick. The reflections are not that of the pilot's seat or the RIO control screens in front of the RIO, ie, Rooster.

Continuity mistake: After Maverick and Rooster are shot down, they go to steal an F14 from the enemy. After the crash Rooster has a wound on the right side of his neck - in several scenes afterwards the wound moves back and forth, from right to left.

Continuity mistake: The scene in the hanger where Maverick is introduced. When Admiral says "be seated" there are only 2 rows of chairs. When Hangman looks over to Rooster he is in a new 3rd row.

Revealing mistake: When Maverick is chasing the 5th Gen fighter in the canyon, it cuts to a shot above his left shoulder. You can see a Gold, Red, and White Flag patch reflected in the canopy. Neither Maverick nor Rooster are wearing flag patches during the mission.

Matdan97

Factual error: Fanboy's squadron patch is for VFA-143, the "World Famous Pukin' Dogs." However, this is an "Echo" squadron, flying the single seat F/A-18E model. Being a WSO, at his apparent age/rank, he is probably not pilot-rated and therefore could not have been assigned to that squadron. Unlike "Bob", he isn't wearing glasses, so he could not have been previously disqualified and even so, he would be wearing his current squadron's badge.

kayelbe

Factual error: The SPY-1 array on the CG the Tomahawks are launched from is on the wrong side of the superstructure.

Continuity mistake: In the first training session, Maverick eliminates both Hangman and Rooster, meaning they should return and do their push-ups and we are shown this, meaning once you have done your PT, that is it for you. However, later in the sequence, both Hangman and Rooster are shown still in the air where Hangman is talking to Rooster about his relationship to Maverick, who has been observing them the whole time.

Suggested correction: Rooster does his pushups after the first sortie, flying with Payback and Fanboy (who made up the rules). Next up are Fritz, Harvard, and Yale, followed by Hangman, Phoenix, and Bob. Omaha, Halo, and Coyote lose next. Then Rooster goes out again but this time with Hangman. Because of their beef, that sortie ends when Maverick tells them to knock it off. Hangman technically didn't get shot down, so Rooster does the last set of pushups by himself. Nowhere is it said the day ends with one set.

Speaking as someone who has worked on pre and post-production on over five hundred films, I must respectfully disagree with this. My point is that the editing has been screwed up, as all the people who were shot down by Maverick stayed down and did not go back up again. We do not see Rooster go up again, so I have to take issue with this.

We absolutely see Rooster in the air again, as I said, this time with Hangman (also on his second sortie). Maverick ended the day's training after the business with Rooster. At no time was it stated that the pilots only flew once.

kayelbe

The film has simplified the script, which explains why more people do the push-ups than agreed in the wager, and the final flight with Rooster and Hangman. 1. In the film, Hangman asks Maverick for permission to go on after Maverick killed Phoenix and Bob. After Hangman loses, of course, he also needs to do the push-ups (presumably the same for other teams). 2. After the first round, Maverick focused on Rooster and Hangman as candidates for mission leader, so he invites them for a second round.

KnightMove

Continuity mistake: In the opening scene, the aircrews are launching and recovering F-18s. When they are guiding the jets to the catapult, F-35s are shown in the sequence.

Factual error: The buddy-lasing does not make sense as shown in the movie. Its purpose is: The attacking aircraft may evade any air defense instantly after releasing its bombs, while the lasing aircraft stays on course at a safer distance and keeps the laser on target long enough for the bombs to hit. In the film, Phoenix and Bob instantly need to turn off the target and fly past it before the bombs hit, so no more laser on target and no actual guidance for the bombs.

KnightMove

Continuity mistake: At the end Hondo is getting the harness out to catch Maverick when he lands, Hondo is wearing his flight deck uniform helmet, flak jacket etc but when he greets Maverick seconds later when he lands his helmet and flak jacket are gone, and he's wearing his camouflage uniform he had on underneath.

Suggested correction: Sufficient time has passed after the crash landing of the F-14, the fire extinction, and Maverick and Rooster getting out of the plane, so Hondo could easily have taken it all off. This is too weak for a "continuity error."

KnightMove

Rear Admiral: The end is inevitable, Maverick. Your kind is headed for extinction.
Maverick: Maybe so, sir. But not today.

Trivia: Despite long being one of Hollywood's most bankable stars, this was the first Tom Cruise film to earn more than $100 million at the domestic box office on its opening weekend. It also went on to become his highest grossing film, as well as his first film to gross $1 billion worldwide.

Question: Isn't Hangman's ammo still full after he hits the bandit chasing Mav and Rooster? Shouldn't it be short of the fired rocket?

Answer: You're correct - when you see Hangman's loadout before he lands back on the deck - he still has all weapons on the rails - it should be that he is short an AIM-9 or an AIM-120 AMRAAM depending on what was fired.

In all shots of Hangman's F/A-18E after the final battle (especially in the close-up right before he lands on the carrier), it is shown that there is an AIM-120 loaded onto the right air intake weapon station. The left air intake station is empty - indicating either no weapon was loaded or an AIM-7/AIM-120 was fired.

You can see that all his missiles are still intact and even if one is missing it would be very unlike to only load on the right and not the left as well. But where he says "This is your savior speaking" you can see all missiles are still on the plane and unfired.
