There's a flashback to the day Jadin committed suicide and how Joe, so depressed and distraught, was going to kill (shoot) himself but his younger son Joseph stopped him. The next morning, Joe tells his wife Lola he decided to "walk across America to New York City" and talk to anybody along the way who will listen about bullying. Then the movie returns to Joe on the road. It has been six months and Joe - ready to quit - starts to have some positive experiences. Joe encounters an elderly man who drives up to him with replacement items in his truck for him - a wheeled cart (Joe's was stolen), food, and water. Then the local sheriff stops when he sees Joe along the road. After questioning him, the sheriff finds out that Joe is walking for his son. The sheriff offers Joe a warm meal and arranges for Joe to speak at the local high school that afternoon. The sheriff tells Joe about his son William, who is gay. Joe and the sheriff discuss their sons and Joe admits that he never really accepted Jadin but loved him. Back on the road, Joe "makes peace" with Jadin, as far as he can. Joe calls Lola to tell her he loves her and Joseph and will be keeping in touch more often. Sheriff Westin, at his office, receives a call from one of his officers saying he is needed at a pedestrian accident scene on U.S. 40 West of Wild Horse. The smashed wheeled cart is shown first. After Sheriff Westin views the body, he says, "Hurry to Jadin, Joe." Paramedics take Joe's covered body into a Lincoln County ambulance. Joe is next seen in a high wheat field looking around until he sees Jadin. Joe puts his arm on Jadin's shoulder and the two walk away. While Brandi Carlile's "The Joke" is playing, short video clips and photos of the real Jadin and family are shown, as well as the following message: "On October 9, 2013, Joe Bell was hit by a truck and killed in Eastern Colorado. The driver had fallen asleep."

Joe Bell: A lot of people don't think it's a big deal to make fun of other people... um, who are different from you. You know, bullying and intolerance can have a deadly effect. And I'm here because I'm walking across America on behalf of my son, Jadin, to speak out against bullying.
