Other mistake: In the bathroom scene where bullies were beating up Jarod, David Valentine "finished" by making the hardest direct blow to Jarod's left cheek near his eye. Afterwards, there was no visible injury to Jarod's left cheek; the injury was on Jarod's right cheek. (00:34:54)
Death and Cremation (2010)
Plot summary
Directed by: Justin Steele
Starring: Brad Dourif, Jeremy Sumpter, Debbon Ayer, Scott Elrod
Genres: Thriller
Jarod (who dresses in all-black clothes) and his mother Martha move into a trailer, apparently after his father's death. Jarod hates his new high school and is bullied often by classmates - in particular, jock David and his friends. Martha practically catches Jarod smoking pot in his bedroom and tells him to get a job because he is not going to lounge around all summer getting high every day. Jarod wasn't having any luck finding a job; almost out of options, he ends up going into a crematorium and asking Stan if he needs any help. Stan is 59, has disfiguring, gross-looking scars on his face and neck, is not sociable, and pays more attention to doing the daily crossword puzzle from the newspaper than potential customers.
Jarod offers to work for free for two weeks on a trial basis, and the seemingly unlikely pair develop a friendship and understanding. Jarod gradually realises that Stan has his own way of dealing with people who rub him the wrong way... and he conveniently has the "tool" to make bodies "disappear." Lindsey Weaver, David's girlfriend, goes to the crematorium with her parents who are looking for an affordable option for a deceased family member. Before leaving the crematorium, Lindsey says, "You're a f*g" (plus some other choice words) to Stan. Bad move! Jarod notices a recently-added vase (urn) on the shelf with the initials "LW."
Within a day or so, Lindsey is reported missing. David Valentine has a similar fate at the hands of Stan after Jarod was the victim of his bullying and suffered facial injuries. Yes, a recently-added vase bearing the initials "DV" is next to Lindsey's! Detective Fairchild investigates the missing teens. Plus the now-missing immigration lawyer Rick (repulsive to Jarod) who was just starting to see Martha, an employee in his office. Will the young, enthusiastic Detective Matt Fairchild be able to figure out what has taken place... or will the initials "MF" be on the latest addition at the crematorium?
Trivia: Brad Dourif ("Stan") and Jeremy Sumpter gave some input to first-time director Steele about the "look" of their characters (and maybe names?). Interestingly, the character played by Jeremy is "Jarod LEARY." Detective Fairchild's first name is "MATT." Matt O'Leary starred with Jeremy in "Frailty."
