Flatliners (2017)

Flatliners is a dreary remake of the movie of the same name where a group of student doctors confront mild visions of death head-on and then fall into individual nightmares involving wrongs demanding righting. Each must own up to their mistakes before it's too late. This is not an a great film, and Ellen Page can't escape the cliches, overall bad plot, or ultimately poor reception. Not even Kiefer Sutherland, who was in the original, can rescue this from its sad demise.

Flatliners has promising moments in it. I liked the concept of the characters flatlining themselves to see if there is an afterlife, and the movie works best when it is trying to be this medical drama-thriller. However, the movie also suffers from an unbalanced tone, where it will go from medical drama-thriller to a jump scare horror movie, and a story about guilt and the movie falters because of it. The movie falters the most when it is revealed the effects of flatlining have consequences that affect them in the real world. It will go from this medical drama-thriller about flatlining and reviving themselves in search of the afterlife to a horror movie where the lives of the characters are being affected by the spirits of their past regrets due to flatlining; I could not take any of it seriously. Overall, some promising moments, but falls apart when the past regrets and consequences of flatlining storylines are introduced.
