Suffragette is a tough-to-bear historical drama about the struggle for woman to gain basic rights during the early movements occurring in Britain. The film follows a small group of downtrodden ladies who endure horrendous work conditions, physical and mental abuse, denigration and ostracism by the males in power over them as they at first peacefully-then increasingly more actively and violently-challenge the status quo until a sacrifice of one of their number brings worldwide attention to the plight. Actresses Carey Mulligan, Meryl Streep, and Helena Bonham Carter lead a great cast in bringing the period to life in a visceral way! Sets, costumes, good cinematography and writing go a long way towards making the movie memorable. While this might be considered in some circles a "chic flick", it's a human drama about the early Right's Movement. Watch with caution, but watch.

Factual error: Throughout the film, the helmet plates worn by the London Policemen are the 1930's pattern with the George V cypher in the centre. In 1912/13 they would have repeated the officer's collar number in the centre. The helmets themselves are also British military pattern blue cloth helmets with Police fittings added, rather than the correct Police pattern ones.

Maud Watts: I'm not just that anymore.
