The Rocky Horror Picture Show

Chosen answer: She kicks him in the groin when he has her cornered on the stairway.

Answer: I was told that Tim Curry AKA Frank N Furter was also accidentally kicked in the groin in the pool shot. You can see the look on his face. But it's not clear if Susan Sarandon did it or the actor playing Rocky did it.

Answer: It happens on the stairwell during the song, "You Better Wise Up, Janet Weiss".

Question: One of my co-workers said the first line in the show was, "Michael Renee was sick the day the Earth stood still". Could you give me the exact first line and what it means?

Answer: The first line to the lyrics of 'Science Fiction/Double Feature' is "Michael Rennie was ill The Day the Earth Stood Still, but he told us where we stand." That line is a reference to the 1951 film classic 'The Day the Earth Stood Still', which stars Michael Rennie as Klaatu, the alien from outer-space, who is shot at the start of the film when he tries to convey a dire message of goodwill to the humans. The rest of the song lyrics refer to other science fiction films including 'The Invisible Man' starring Claude Rains, 'King Kong' starring Fay Wray, and 'Tarantula' starring Leo G. Carroll.

Answer: It has never been expressly stated, though many theories exist, the primary one being that Frank and the others were sent to Earth simply to experiment on human life and possibly reproduce it (Frank is a scientist, they have a lab, he creates Rocky etc.) and to test their technology on humans. This would require a level of covertness, which Frank disregards by flaunting his hedonistic lifestyle, and thus could have been seen as a failure.

Question: Why, when Betty and Ralph drive off on honeymoon at the start does the car say 'Wait till tonight - she got hers now he'll get his'? Am I missing something or am I just being naive and innocent?

The Doctor

Chosen answer: It means they are going to have sex. The bride got her groom and the groom is going to get laid.

Bruce Minnick

She got her ring, he'll get his ring... I'll leave the rest to your imagination.

Chosen answer: Yes, this is alluded to by the Criminologist (narrator) circling their heads on a big picture from the wedding.

Chosen answer: They are most definitely NOT the same actress. Patricia Quinn was born in 1944 in Belfast, Northern Ireland, and Patricia Heaton was born in 1958 in Ohio.

Question: Two questions about the song "Touch-a touch-a touch me." 1. Janet tells Rocky that she only kissed before. Columbia looks shocked and asks Magenta, "You mean she?" with Magenta confirming. What was the implication? 2. Janet tells Rocky that she wants to stay the distance. What did she mean by that? Shouldn't she really be saying that she wants to go the distance?

Answer: Janet has only gone as far as kissing. Columbia is saying "you mean she's a virgin?" Stay the distance means basically the same thing as go the distance. I don't know if the phrase was more popular in the 70's or the song writer just liked the flow of "stay" instead of "go."

Question: It's known that the newspaper Janet holds over her head is the Cleveland Plain Dealer, but why that paper, especially considering the movie was filmed in England?

Answer: The setting of Richard O'Brien's original Rocky Horror story was in and around the fictional town of Denton, Ohio. For the movie, the geographic location was more vague; O'Brien claimed many years later that the "Cleveland Plain Dealer" was used merely for recognition purposes so as to appeal to American audiences. But, actually, set designer Brian Thompson chose the "Cleveland Plain Dealer" as a tip-of-the-hat to the story's original setting in Ohio. Also, when we briefly see the Criminologist's map of Brad and Janet's fateful journey, it's a map of southeast Ohio.

Question: Does anyone know what that thing is that Dr. Scott examines intently while he's sitting in the Zen room?

Question: Someone I met years ago told me when you watch this film, it's a tradition to yell at the characters during many parts of the movie (such as yelling "SL*T" at Janet). Nobody else I ever asked heard of this "tradition." Has anyone ever heard of this?

Answer: Yes, whether you're watching a live play or the film, audience participation is encouraged, including shouting "sl*t" for Janet and "a**hole" for Brad when their name are sometimes mentioned. There's also a lot talk-back lines for the audience, including saying other insults. And if you go to a showing for your first time, like I did in the 90's, you'll likely be asked if you're a virgin.

Visible crew/equipment: Just as Eddie rides his motorcycle down from the lab's upper level, in the shot from behind him, set equipment and a few crew members are seen gathered at the top right of the screen, just before the shot cuts away. (00:44:40)
