Other mistake: At the ending climax as Bowman is cutting the oxygen pack from Gallagher, you can see Gallagher's name plate on the front. However as Gallagher was running we clearly saw him take off his own pack, toss it aside and put on Burchenal's. This is made blatantly obvious as the camera pans to the discarded pack on the ground with the name "GALLAGHER" printed on the front. Which means the nameplate Bowman removes should read Burchenal, not Gallagher. (01:39:25)

Suggested correction: The space suit has two parts. Burchenal throws the outer part to Gallagher just before he lights himself up. You see Gallagher putting this part on as he discards his own spent oxygen. The outer part has the label for Burchenal, which is the part Carrie Ann Moss cuts off in the recovery scene. The name Gallagher is displayed on the inner part of the suit, which is correct for this actor, as this is Gallagher's actual suit. Only the cut-off part would have Burchenal's name on it.

Continuity mistake: In the earlier scenes on the planet's surface when the men still have their helmets on, it appears that the cameramen were also wearing space suits so that they would appear as crewmen on the visor reflections. Still too many people visible though.

Question: The ship is hit by a solar flare. But in that case shouldn't Earth advise them about the solar flare incoming? It is supposed that the Sun is constantly watched for solar flares, in case a human mission is en route. Shouldn't mission control on Earth be watching for any unusual solar activity to advise the crew? And they could warn them with time because radio waves go faster than solar flares.

Answer: The ship is not hit by a solar flare, it is hit by a gamma ray burst. It is a completely different, much more violent phenomena.
