Gone Girl

Question: Why does Amy whack herself in the face with a hammer? Her plan is working at this point. She's achieved anonymity and escaped her life. What possible good could cover from hitting herself in the face with a hammer? (01:13:04)

Answer: To my knowledge, the purpose of hitting herself was two-fold. First of all, a facial injury would support the idea that she was abused or in some sort of bad situation. And secondly, to help mildly alter her appearance, so she could blend in more. (Especially considering people were looking for her).

Question: After Amy has killed Mr Collins, as she's climbing off the bed, she puts her hand securely between her legs, like she is trying to hold onto his semen. Is that what she's doing?

kh1616

Chosen answer: That may have been what she was doing. Amy was attempting to make it look like she'd been repeatedly raped by Collins, so she was doing various things to herself, like using a bottle to self-inflict trauma onto her privates to look like forced sex.

Question: How is August 5th the day to take out the trash when July 5th was also?

Answer: The city may have fluctuating trash days. Or more likely, the July 5th schedule wasn't the regular pick up day due to the July 4th holiday.

Continuity mistake: Some scenes were shot after Rosamund Pike had gained some weight, following the plot of the book correctly. However, they were edited together very badly, so that the extra pounds (most visible on her face) come and go several times during the montage showing what she did during the first two days of her "kidnapping." Pasty face with puffy cheeks, and sleek face with taut skin over jutting cheekbones switch back and forth in what amounts to a matter of hours in the film's plot.

Trivia: Pay close attention to the board games Nick gives to his sister (including "Mastermind" and "The Game of Life") - they are all subtly relevant to the plot of the film.
