
Trivia: The movie came about partially thanks to the "Super Nintendo World" theme parks. As the Nintendo World parks were to be situated in Universal Studios theme parks, Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto met many Universal executives, including Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri, to discuss the park's creation. Miyamoto felt Meledandri was a kindred spirit due to their similar creative processes and began talking with him about making a new Mario movie. Within a few years, the project was greenlit.

Trivia: 14-year-old Preston Mutanga animated the Lego segment. The directors had seen a video he posted on Twitter recreating the trailer for this movie from Lego, and wanted to showcase his talent. The universe seen (Earth 13122) is meant to be the same one as in the Lego Marvel Super Heroes games.

Trivia: This is the second consecutive Ninja Turtles film in which Rocksteady is portrayed by a professional wrestler. He was played by Sheamus in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows, and voiced in this film by John Cena.
