Trivia: Rhythm and Hues won the Oscar for Best Visual Effects for this film. It was their third Oscar. But ironically, the company had to declare bankruptcy and lay-off half their staff just a few months before they won. And when the company was brought up during an acceptance speech for the film, the microphone was cut off. This led to widespread demonstrations and protests against the film and director Ang Lee by effects artists, as they are often marginalized, overworked and underpaid by studios.
Trivia: Nicole's car bears Georgia license plate CHN 320. This is the same plate number used on the General Lee in "the Dukes of Hazzard".
Trivia: Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark are the only Hunger Game tributes ever referred to by their first and last names. The other tributes are just identified by their first names, even when they're being introduced by Caesar Flickerman during the televised interviews or their scores are being announced on television.
Trivia: After the film was released, director M.J. Bassett (then credited as "Michael J. Bassett") admitted she was extremely disappointed by how the film turned out, and even wrote a blog entry where she apologized to fans who were also disappointed by it. In a later interview, Bassett admitted to second-guessing many of the creative choices in the film, often altering her vision to try and make the movie more broad and appealing for the producers, instead of fighting to make a more personal film with a clear vision. Bassett called the film a "nightmare dance" that she just "couldn't do."
Trivia: Kate Beckinsale's stunt double Alicia Vela-Bailey makes a cameo during the opening sequence as a vampire escaping the purge. (00:03:40)
Trivia: Joseph Gordon-Levitt injured his arm whilst filming after colliding with a taxi window with his bike and required 31 stitches. A behind the scenes clip of this can be seen partway into the end credits.
Trivia: When the fireball starts rolling inside the Mayan City, two soldiers fall off a cliff and one of them yells a Wilhelm scream.
Trivia: Dredd's face is never shown during the film. This is consistent with the comic strips in which Dredd is almost never shown without his helmet and, on the rare occasions when he is, his face is obscured in some other way. Fans were critical of the 1995 Judge Dredd film for the fact that Dredd spent much of the time with his helmet off and his face exposed.
Trivia: When Mrs. Hills is offering Heather her grandmother's necklace, the man standing next to her is Jeff Kinney, the author of the books.
Trivia: Originally Clair and Chris Redfield were to appear in the film after having been featured in previous movies. But script-changes lead to them being written out, and their fates were left ambiguous. Clair will be re-appearing in the sixth film, however.
Trivia: During one take of the fight sequence between the Evil Queen and Snow White, Julia Roberts accidentally pulled out some of Lily Collins' hair.
Trivia: Kristen Stewart performed many of her own stunts in the movie.
Trivia: Booker is a nod to "Good Guys Wear Black" in which Chuck Norris portrayed a character named John T. Booker. In both films Norris plays a retired military operative in a rescue mission to help his old comrades.
Trivia: Daniel Radcliffe plays the same character which Adrian Rawlins, who plays his father in the Harry Potter franchise, played in a 1989 British TV movie.
