Since it stands out as a strange name, it is often believed to be a mistranslation, but it's actually correct, and the mistranslation lies in another character of similar appearance near Saria who tells Link "Bagu is my name. Show my note to the River Man." He is supposed to be named Bug, not Bagu, to make a pair; Bug and Error.
