Carrie (1976)

Question: Why do Chris and her friends bully Carrie? She's never done anything to them and I've read the book which also provides no answers.

Rob245

Answer: Bullying doesn't have anything to do with whether or not someone did anything to someone else. Bullies zero in on people they know are emotionally weaker and less able to defend themselves. Carrie was extremely shy, awkward, naive, etc. These are traits that bullies tend to exploit for their own amusement and to make themselves feel superior.

Three's Company (1977)

Answer: She was worried that Jack would come to regret his decision. She thought at some point in the future he would marry and want to have children.

LK

Answer: There could be any number of reasons. Some people believe any form of birth control (even for men) is wrong. Janet might (erroneously) think Jack is being selfish and immature by avoiding fatherhood, and so on.

Question: Luke lost his lightsaber in Cloud City, how has it been retrieved?

Rob245

Answer: It has not yet been answered in a canon source. The novel series that continued the stories after Return of the Jedi had Luke's lightsaber being found along with his severed hand which was then used to make a clone. The new movie series has made those stories no longer canon. It is possible Rise of Skywalker will answer this question.

BaconIsMyBFF

Answer: In "Return Of The Jedi", after Luke turns himself over to Darth Vader, he is handed Luke's lightsaber to which Vader says, "I see you've constructed a new light saber." This would mean that after Luke lost his first lightsaber at Cloud City, he made himself another one.

Luke did make a new lightsaber after losing the first one, but he was the sole owner of it. In The Force Awakens, when Rey finds the lightsaber in the dungeon, Maz Kanata tells her that it once belonged to Luke Skywalker, and before him, it was his father's (Darth Vader). This would mean it is the same one that Luke lost when Vader sliced off his hand that was holding the lightsaber during their duel in Cloud City (The Empire Strikes Back). Somehow, that lightsaber was found on the planet's surface and made its way into Maz's possession. It now belongs to Rey.

raywest

Answer: When asked about how she came into possession of Luke's old lightsaber, which once belonged to Anakin Skywalker, Maz Kanata says that it's a tale for another time. Presumably it will be explained in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.

It is not.

Question: How is the couple, mother played by Mandy Moore, able to adopt the orphaned kid? Given they're a poor couple with two kids already, wouldn't the hospital hold off on this for awhile and try locating the child's parents?

Rob245

Answer: Where did you get that they were poor? they were middle class and had their own home.

Answer: Because that would not have made for an interesting TV series.

Baby Mama (2008)

Question: Why does Kate even go through the surrogate mother routine with Angie? Why not just adopt a baby?

Rob245

Answer: She did apply for adoption, but because she's a single woman, "it can take about 5 years to get an adoption" and would cost $100K. She didn't want to wait that long for a child.

Bishop73

Answer: She had attempted to adopt, but was denied. Unmarried people often have more difficulty in adopting children. It can also take years before a child becomes available and the cost is high.

Question: When the guys are in that bar, the police raid it. Why do they do this? The place not have a license to operate or something?

Rob245

Answer: The mud wrestling is a form of gambling, betting money on winning. The bar probably didn't have a gambling permit.

Overboard (2018)

Question: Maybe I'm foolish but if they're poor then how does Kate afford a nice looking car?

Rob245

Answer: Just because someone is low income doesn't mean they can't own a decent car. Kate could spend what little money she has to pay for her car and still consider herself poor because she has no money left over after paying bills. Plenty of low income people still own decent cars because they are more reliable and require less maintenance than an older car, and are thus a good investment. Kate has three children, works two jobs, and goes to school. She has to have a good car to get back and forth and there's no way she could afford a major repair on an older car, so buying a new car is actually a smart choice for her situation.

Jawbreaker (1999)

Question: Maybe I missed something but why didn't Julie go to the police anyway? They might've believed her. The other thing is, once revealed just what sort of sentence do you think Courtney would receive? Maybe a year in juvie followed by several years in state prison?

Forrest Gump (1994)

Question: Would the army really take a guy with a low I.Q., much less one with a cleft lip?

Rob245

Answer: The Army doesn't issue IQ tests upon enlistment. Given that Forrest had a college degree, and passed basic training with flying colors because of his amazing ability to follow orders, he would be allowed in just fine. And Bubba didn't have a cleft lip, just big gums.

LorgSkyegon

Answer: I can't even guess why you think a cleft lip would disallow someone from being admitted into the Army, or anything/anywhere else for that matter.

Because an unrepaired cleft lip is a disqualifying disability. You can't join the US military if you have one.

Question: Why do they spare one Mexican cop while killing the other one who is dirty?

Rob245

Question: Why couldn't ET fly earlier in the movie while people pursued him?

Rob245

Answer: He can't fly he can only make objects levitate.

Question: Why couldn't ET use his magic finger on himself when he was ill?

Rob245

Answer: The ability is meant to be empathic - he can use his energy to heal other life-forms but must himself heal normally, given sufficient time and hope. Elliot's caring for E.T. helps facilitate his recovery.

Erik M.

Answer: He may have been too weak to do it himself.

The Simpsons (1989)

Answer: They simply didn't like the real Seymour Skinner. He was headstrong and didn't vibe with the townsfolk. Armin was a pushover who didn't really rock the boat, so to speak, so they wanted to keep him around to maintain the previous status quo.

Forrest Gump (1994)

Question: Given what a brute Jenny's boyfriend is at the hippie party, why would everyone just stare silently at Forrest when all he did was deck the jerk, merely defending her?

Rob245

Answer: He disrupted the Black Panthers' meeting and assaulted one of their members (or at least someone allied to their cause).

Question: Where did Splinter get the turtles their weapons since they live in a sewer?

Rob245

Answer: While never really adressed, the most popular fan theories suggest that either: 1. Splinter manufactured the weapons with materials he found in the sewers or 2. Splinter scavenged for the weapons at a local dump or 3. They were ordered online (only applies to the 2014 version). Fans admit these explanations are kind of a stretch but certain scenes across movies and/or series lend credibility to one explanation or the other. 1. They seem to know how to improve or even craft their weapons meaning that someone taught them (Splinter). 2. They seem to be troubled when a weapon goes missing or breaks meaning they have limited access to spares. 3. Money doesn't seem to be an issue considering all the pizza that is consumed (in some cases the Turtles have been seen holding down jobs like tech support or birthday party mascot). The original purchase could've been made with money scavanged in the sewers and delivered to a P.O. box Source: https://tinyurl.com/y6kbxhlq.

Batman and Robin (1997)

Answer: As to the first part of your question, Mr. Freeze was temporarily placed in Poison Ivy's cell while his own cell was being remade into a lab for him to continue his research.

raywest

Thanks, in the book version of the movie he bribed the guards with diamonds used to power his suit. That and everyone forgets she's a victim like him, not asking to be turned into a monster, so it just seems unfair.

The Craft (1996)

Question: Who put Nancy in the asylum? That and how did Bonnie get those scars on her back?

Rob245

Answer: Bonnie's scars were the result of a previous auto accident. As for Nancy, it's not specifically shown how or by who she was committed to a psychiatric hospital.

Power Rangers (2017)

Answer: It is implied that she has died, her body freezing as it drifts towards the moon.

raywest

Answer: No, she's not dead. This show seems to be following similarly to the original TV show. In the show, she was in a stasis like state trapped in a "trash can" on the moon. After she escapes this prison, she sets up her evil base with Lord Zed on the moon and continues to attack Angel Grove and the Rangers from the Moon. So her being blasted towards the Moon at the end of this reboot is a set up for her establishing a similar base of operations like in the show in the sequels. If the sequels ever get out of development hell.

Question: Given how organized she's supposed to be why didn't she sign those papers prior to going home for Jake's signature? That and why not tell her boyfriend the truth? He looked like he'd understand.

Rob245

Answer: Melanie didn't sign the papers because, deep down, she still loved Jake, and probably, subconsciously, hoped they'd get back together. She didn't tell her fiance' because she mostly was in denial about the state of her feelings and her marriage. She'd fooled herself into believing she had signed the papers.

raywest

Answer: If Melanie was happy, why did she take her engagement ring off when she stopped by Jakes and it's obvious he was still her everything seeing as she went there first before her parents.

She took off her engagement ring so Jake wouldn't see it, not knowing his reaction, which could complicate the situation, as well as anger and upset him. She wanted to end their relationship as quickly and easily as possible. She went there first just to get it over with.

raywest

Answer: Also the director made a point it was never about rediscovering herself or Jake, it was choosing between what she had planned and what she truly wanted. The director also talked about how she did not pack enough clothes, so she wore her old clothes, she was supposed to be there for a long weekend but she wanted to be there, so it was obvious she wanted to stay.

Answer: She didn't sign the divorce papers on purpose. That is why Jake never signed them because then he might have to face the fact that it was over. That is why Melanie never went home, she might have to accept that it was over and Jake might have moved on, that is why she said yes to Andrew's proposal. Also when Melanie did not sign the papers at the wedding, when she dumped Andrew, that was the first time that Melanie was honest to herself and the people around her about how she felt and what she had longed for, for the last seven years.

The only reason Melanie said yes to Andrew's proposal is because she did not know that Jake felt the same way. The reason that Melanie did not sign the papers at the wedding because she had to be honest with herself and the people around her about how she felt and what she had longed for since she left.

30 Rock (2006)

Answer: There's probably lots of reasons why Liz stays - money, lack of other job prospects and so on. The reality is, if she left, that would adversely affect the story line and the comedy within it. Tina Fey was one of the stars, and her character is an integral part of the show.
