Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith

Trivia: General Grievous is permanently coughing when he talks. The cause is revealed in the last episode of the animated Emmy-winning TV series "Clone Wars" (albeit technically no longer canon). In that episode, Grievous kidnaps Palpatine and before leaving, is attacked by Mace Windu, who destroys part of his chest armour, making him cough for the first time.

Trivia: George Lucas makes a cameo appearance during the opera scene. He is the blue faced being, named Baron Papanoida, that you see outside Palpatine's box. It marks Lucas' first and only appearance in any of the Star Wars films; also in that scene is Lucas' daughter Amanda and her boyfriend. Lucas also reportedly provides the sound of General Grievous' coughing.

Trivia: Hayden Christensen wanted to wear the Darth Vader suit in the films, as it had always been a dream of his (revealed in the DVD commentary). Though the filmmakers hesitated, as Christensen was too short, they eventually let him wear the suit onscreen, but Christensen had to look through the mouth-piece of the Darth Vader costume, not the eyes.

Trivia: The blue-skinned Twi'lek Jedi Aayla Secura, who can be seen in this film and "Attack of the Clones", was not created by George Lucas. She originated in the Star Wars comic books from Dark Horse. After seeing a cover painting, George Lucas became so impressed that he decided to use her in the movies.

Trivia: Gary Oldman was originally supposed to provide the voice of General Grievous, but he backed out after learning the film was to be made outside of the Screen Actor's Guild, of which he is a member.

Trivia: Much of the crew make cameos in the film. For example, Nick Gillard, the stunt coordinator, plays a character named Cin Drallig, his name spelled backwards. Cin Drallig is a Jedi instructor who is killed by Anakin in the Jedi Temple massacre.

Trivia: George Lucas' three children play cameos. Jet is a young Jedi called Zett Jukassa. Amanda plays a character called Terr Taneel, and Katie plays a blue-skinned alien called Chi Eekway, both visible when Palpatine arrives at the senate after being saved by the Jedi.

Trivia: A scene of Yoda arriving on Dagobah appears as a deleted scene on the DVD. The shot, especially the appearance of Yoda inside his ships, is a very obvious homage to E.T., the Extraterrestrial, which was directed by Lucas's friend Steven Spielberg.

Trivia: In the first shot of the space battle at the beginning, just before the camera pans down to Obi-Wan and Anakin's fighters, a piece of debris hits a spaceship. Closer inspection reveals that this is a kitchen sink.

Trivia: Although their characters are mother and son, Mark Hamill and Natalie Portman had never met each other until the 81st Golden Globe Awards in 2024, where Mark Hamill referred to Natalie Portman as "mother."

Trivia: For close-ups, both Luke and Leia were played by Aidan Barton, the son of film editor Roger Barton. A carefully wrapped rubber baby was used for other shots of the twins.

Trivia: Despite receiving prominent billing, Christopher Lee has only 3 minutes of screen time, with only 4 lines.

Continuity mistake: In the scene where Anakin arrives on Mustafar and tells R2-D2 to stay with the ship, he pulls the hood of his robe over his head with two organic hands. His right hand should be mechanical. [This mistake is mentioned in the audio commentary: this shot is taken from a shot of Obi-Wan later in the film when leaving Padme's apartment. Still a mistake, though.] (01:32:55)

Question: When some Jedi die, they disappear (Yoda, Obi-wan). When others die, they don't (Qui-gon, Vader). Why is that? I thought this phenomenon would be explained in this movie, but unless I missed something, no explanation was given.

Matty Blast

Chosen answer: Powerful force users seem to have some degree of control over their bodies even after death. In the later series, Luke's wife Mara Jade Skywalker only allows her body to disappear when her killer, and nephew Jacen Solo arrives at her funeral as a clue. Thus it appears that a powerful force user can simply choose if they wish their body to disappear.

Answer: Towards the end of the movie Yoda tells Obi Wan that Qui Gon has learned the path to imortality and offers to teach this to Obi Wan. In the Clone Wars TV series we see the journey Yoda takes to learn this power. The power to become one with the force is a power you have to learn as opposed to being achievable to all Jedi. Both yoda and Obi Wan has the years between ROTS and ANH/ESB to fine tune and master this power. It is possible that Darth Vader, having seen Obi Wan become one with the force, spent the following years after A New Hope, studying and learning this skill by himself, hence how he was able to appear as a force ghost towards the end of Return of the Jedi, but not quite skilled enough to dissapear on cue.
