Glen Close's character dies (we think) by drowning in a bathtub, then is shot by Michael Douglas's wife when she pops back up to get one last try at revenge. Then she actually does die.

Alex Forrest: I had a wonderful time last night. I'd like to see you again. Is that so terrible?
Dan Gallagher: No. I just don't think it's possible.
Trivia: The original ending had Alex Forrest committing suicide with Dan Gallagher arrested for her death.
Question: Why does Alex abduct Ellen and take her to a carnival?
Answer: Because she's unhinged! And she wants Dan to know that she can get to him, or in this case his daughter, anytime she wants. And she's angry that Dan had an affair with her then went back to his wife.
