Flynn (Philip Seymour Hoffman) leaves to another church and school. Some time later, Sister James (Amy Adams) returns after visiting her sick brother. She talks with Sister Aloysius (Meryl Streep) and she mentions that Father Flynn left to another school and church and got a promotion. Sister James says that she believes that Flynn didn't do anything wrong. Sister Aloysius sticks to her suspicion and believes that Flynn is guilty and that no evidence is necessary. When Sister James asks why Flynn left, Aloysius reveals that she lied about calling another church asking about his past; lying about the phone call forced Flynn to leave. It's not stated if Flynn is guilty. Aloysius cries and expresses her regret for lying to Father Flynn and she doubts if he's really guilty.

Factual error: At the beginning of the movie, there is a scene showing a car driving through an intersection containing curb cuts (street-level curb corners) and painted crosswalks. The movie is supposed to be set in 1964. Curb cuts were first introduced in 1970 and not widely used until after the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990. Painted crosswalks were not used much until the late 1990s.
